hey everyone, im not sure if it has to do with the area people are living in but i see what seem to be extremely high salaries for a lot of people on here. i live in florida and i have 5 years of experience as a database developer. I know PL/SQL, Optymyze, Salesforce Admin, and Oracle. Ive also led a project as a Scrum Master so i feel like i have a decent set of skills under my belt. How is it that people are getting 6 figure salary offers straight out of college then?
Companies/location/multiple offers/ job switching. Etc?
I’ve worked for Humana, Sogeti, and then Johnson & Johnson. I live in the Bay Area of Florida and I’ve never gotten multiple offers
Have u interviewed multiple places at same time?
What is your pay?. These folks have higher equity which increases the TC. FL COL is lesser, I bet you might have a better lifestyle than these guys in high COL cities.
I’m making $83k + bonus
I was in a similar situation before. Moved to HCOL city, TC almost doubled now .
wtf is a database developer? you're upset you make >83k in Florida as a non SWE ???? lol
I kind of have to agree here. Too specialized and most SWE can do this same job plus a lot more. Broaden your skillset and you can get a bit more in FL.
Hey there IHS
Glassdoor says the average pay for a Database Developer is $89,493, sounds about what you're making. The higher offers are for Software engineers.
I live in FL and make 70 + bonus, 1 YoE. It’s just the state. No state tax cuts salary in half, apparently.
Oh, yeah, it sounds like the explanation is a simple one. Those crazy salaries you're seeing are for SWEs or Directors, etc. From what I've seen, I'm at the high end of comp (adjusted for COL) for non-SWE individual contributors. TC: 135k Location: DFW IT Focus: Infrastructure -- Network/VoIP YoE: 5
For whatever reason, Florida is usually at the bottom of the barrel on enterprises' cost of living sheets. Sure, we don't have state income tax, but our property taxes, sales tax, school tuitions, home pricing, insurance, power etc are all on par and sometimes higher than other cities that are much higher on the cost of living sheets (Austin for example). It's time for a lot of these enterprises to update their metrics! (long overdue actually). It sucks, but yeah - it's part of living in FL. That said, I would never move to the west coast - the pay increase doesn't offset the insane cost of living. If you are up for a move tho, something like Austin might be a good place.
Yes, by all means, go to Austin. High COL and overcrowding in Austin doesn't affect me in DFW, so that sounds fine. And I'm not a fan of Repubs, but Liberal policies and politics have caused massive emigration for places like Chicago, NYC, SoCal. Austin is likely to follow in their footsteps, so *shrug*.
Most are in Silicon Valley. Home prices there are like FL - just multiply by 10-15 times, which also drives general cost of living overall. Plus 12% state income tax. A $100k salary in FL would need to be nearly $250k or more to break even.
Move to Austin or Dallas/Fort Worth
You live in Florida.
Wrap it up folks, our work here is done
Florida is expensive! LOL
