Quitting this Slave life
Semiconductors has to be the least glamorous, lowest paying tech jobs with some of the worst WLB in the Bay Area (daily 7:00-900 am with Europe and 5:00-7:00 pm with Asia conference calls anyone?). Except for maybe Nvidia or Intel, working in this industry seems to be career limiting, which is ironic given that it's called the Silicon Valley after all. Personally I can't wait to GTFO, but it's so dang difficult. Anyone else in the same boat?
Not just semiconductors, any low level programming job like storage, compilers, kernel programming get no love anymore ... while app developers in companies like uber , Airbnb are millionaires.
Unfortunately it's true. I went to school for EE and spent 10 years in semi. GTFO requires a non trivial amount of effort but doable
What do you do at Google? Can you give me any tips on how you did it?
I lead one of the Google Cloud products. It took me two and a half years of continuous effort to make the switch. I failed Google interview two times (and a few other interviews along the way). To get there, I set aside time to learn new things every day: 2-4 hours each day (early mornings and late evenings) and ~8 hours during weekends. It's a brutal schedule, especially if you have a full-time day job and kids (I do), but that was the only way that allowed me to get up to speed with my new target industry. I used my learning time to read and practice (side projects, build simple apps). I did it for two years continuously. Ramping up at Google is challenging but feels like vacation compared to what I had to go through to get there. :)
The world cannot live without Hardware. I see it as a plus, you have knowledge which is less common and you can easily gain knowledge which is more common. More value to SW knowing HW engineers. And are the ones who can provide real inputs to the fields like Software Defined Hardware.
This knowledge is still very common, just outside of US in Taiwan, Korea, China.
Semi conductor industry is dying. We all know this. Just look at the colleagues around you, do you still find fresh new faces under 30? What's the percentage? And they say it will come to a cycle, so sw will has its lows too. The claim is BS. SW always creates new demand and expand new field. What does hw have to offer? It can only try its best to follow the hype. If sw is at down turn, hw would be dead already.
Then what is the future of the ppl who are working in hardware
Days of Future Past. Gotta get busy living (SW) or busy dying (HW).
Also being at Intel isn't a good thing now. Morale is crap. Plenty of colleagues have GTFO, I need to go soon too. Only decent HW companies in terms of pay are Apple and Nvidia, but they also work you like a dog.
Mid career hw engineer with 8-10 yoe is making like 180-200k at semiconductor companies like Intel Qualcomm (may be 25% more at Apple and nvidia) SW kids with less than 5 yoe banging 300k easily. hw industry is still going to be there but there is not growth, it sucks. my only question for software folks, with all the online resources like hackerrank and leetcode for everyone to pick up data structures and algorithm, is this demand for sw engr gonna sustain ?
It isn't going to sustain the current rate for various reasons. You're better of being in an area with a higher barrier to entry than leetcode
they are still paying 300k to get people
innovation in HW is more of sustainability now it seems. What after 7nm (practically) or 5 years from now.. how about 10 ? SW has lots of potential to grow, SW can spin the same HW in several different ways. Do HW folks get to WFH ? ;)
you do if you are on rtl/Dv
No, I have had two recruiters offer jobs then come back and say “1. how much more to get you to work on site?” “2. They have decided they have too many working offsite already.” I wasn’t able to move taking care of a relative who has since recovered. Now I get “why haven’t you worked for X months?” Even though I can move now. Basically they use wfh as a bait and switch tactic.
Very rightly said.
Feel exactly the same way. Gtfo
You wanna try software? 7-10am and 8-11pm blocks are game for any global conference call everyday. Off-shoring and 24x7 factory has killed the soul of the industry more than anything else. Have you checked how Cloud is sold as a panacea? By giving customers less of everything and moving labor offshore. It's cost-effective only because of the cheaper labor. It's not going to last long. You're also getting a very skewed picture because of high-flying stocks at FAANG. They will fly low next decade and you'll wonder what you're doing at FAANG. It's a cycle.
IDK what you're describing is Oracle, but Oracle is particularly bad culture wise and outsourcing wise.
