I'm heading to Amazon soon as a new-grad and recently I found out that a paper I wrote with my research PI got accepted into an ACM conference that's being hosted in a different city. The conference is on a Monday 2 weeks after I start and I have the option of going there to help present my work. Would it reflect poorly on me for taking time off so early in my new job? I really want to present this work since I worked hard on the research that went into it. Thanks!
Do it. As an ex Amazonian and depending on your team, youโll find little time to do these things in the future. They should understand.
they might pay for it for you. see if your future manager is a good person or not :-)
Go with an Amazon badge, treat it like a business trip ๐ค
I would reach out to your new boss and bring this up. Just say that you had previously submitted and just found out you were selected. Ask if they would prefer you move your start day a couple weeks
Just bring it to ur manager. He will be more than happy to let you go.
Best practice is declaring any planned time off at the offer point. Iโve never gotten a no but itโs good to still have leverage and give your team a heads up
Totally sounds like a justifiable business trip. Your manager should be proud and supportive!
Your manager should understand and support you, as you are an investment to the team. Either way your first 6 months would not be evaluated seriously unless you are way under the bar or a misshire

How to save India from destruction?
Since it's related to research in the industry, I don't think it would be an issue. Leaving for vacation after two weeks might be a little more frowned upon.
