I've recently switched jobs and my old manager was a great guy. He mostly used to track deadlines via emails and communicate privately with people under him. I mean he was rarely rude to anyone and would listen to voice of reason and justifications. He never used to throw his employees under the bus. But my current manager is a bit different. He comes to ones cubicle and rudely asks for status reports out in the open and says stuff like what were you even doing since last x days + other humiliating things with worst part being the non private nature of conversations. Doing it in ones cubicle in a slightly loud voice means everyone in team can hear it. It hasn't happened to me yet but I've seen two of my colleagues facing this with one of them multiple time and he is miserable under him. It was not even entirely his fault. This is new to me. My question is: Is this acceptable behavior and am I just being a snowflake? And is it fairly common in entire tech industry or only in companies like Oracle? I am moving to Google soon and do I need to be on the lookout for such managers there as well?
Not acceptable. Yes, the manager call wherever you go is the single most critical call. For companies that hire for a specific team - I’ve made it a point to decline interviews if they ask me to do a screen before giving me the opportunity to speak with the hiring manager. It’s easier to request that when you have experience but may not be as easy to do it when you’re relatively inexperienced.
And I don’t know what it is with oracle but every time I’ve interviewed there in the past - I’ve had rude interviewers.
Definitely not acceptable.
