I have started my career with Morgan Stanley as a Technology Associate (SWE). 1 YOE. Is working at a bank looked down upon in tech? Will it be difficult for me to transition to real tech companies like Google, Facebook? Does working at a bank hurt my chances to get an interview with them?
You’re not the golden child celebrity at an IB. The IB Analysts are. Tech companies believe that engineers are the lifeblood, and you’re treated as such
Worked in tech and IB. Can confirm last sentence.
Why would you be? It depends on what career you pursue at those companies. If you find a job in tech that deals with similar problems such as near real time data transaction, your experience might be even more valuable. Windows kernel developer trying to switch to user interface may have hard time justifying his level at the next job.
Best thing to do is ask 'who is making the company money'? If you are a cost center (tech) vs a revenue center (ib) you will always be less valuable

Not looked down on but certainly restrictive. More often than not, colleagues in banking, not hedge funds, are quite behind in terms of cutting edge practices- likely due to higher ups blocking advancement.
