Hi everyone, my partner just gets an offer from google. But she can not decide whether she want to take it or leave it. She keep asks for my opinions and I am not in tech industry. Any suggestions and advices will be really appreciated!
Background:
CS master degree
4 YOE
Seattle based
She currently works at Microsoft azure for almost 2 years.
Her current package Microsoft 61 :
Base: 145K
Sign on : 40k( split into 2 years)
Stock: 120k (she joined Microsoft during the stock crash, so she has about 880 shares in total)
Bonus: 10%
Annual raise:5%
Seattle based office, not required go back to office until next year.
Google L4 offer:
Base: 151k
Sign on : 0
Stock : 371K
Bonus : 15%
Team based in Sunnyvale. but allow her to continue stay and fully remote work from Seattle.
She interviewed google 1 year ago, but did not pass through team match and google HR just reached out to her a couple month ago for a new round of team match, so she got the job offer without any interview rounds.
2 main reasons why she want to choose google:
1. She really like google’s team, said she can use c++ or something like that during work and it can helps her future career development.
2. She said google can offer better Work life balance, so she can have more spare time to do things she likes( she was not able to spend a lot of time on her hobbies due to long working hours from azure)
2 main reasons why she hesitate:
1. If she choose to join google, she have to return 2nd year sign on bonus from Microsoft. ( 20k) Since she joined the team around early March. And google wants her to start around early January
2. She said her boss promised to promote her from 61 to 62 by the end of this year, and if she goes to google. She has to climb the ladder all over again.
She also said money is not the most important thing, but it is a huge bonus.
I said I will support her no matter what her decision is, and I just want her to be happy.
I will love to heard any advice and suggestions from people who actually work with the tech
Thank you!

1- improve the offer by 20k; or
2- postpone the date so she doesn’t have to return the sign on bonus
Having worked at Microsoft in the past, and working at Google now…I would choose Google over Microsoft anytime without even second thinking about it.
Search for Stock refreshers at Google vs Stock refreshers at Microsoft and the difference is Night and Day
WLB at Google, although it is team dependent, is generally much better than Microsoft on average
Also Ask yourself, how much more can she make staying at Microsoft compared to this L4 offer
