Why is being outwardly motivated by money/TC frowned upon by managers?

My manager seemed put off when I mentioned (privately) that *one* of my professional motivators is money/TC. Of course, TC doesn't fully drive my decisions. I understand that many other factors lend to good quality of life, but TC does help me feel better about my work.
I don't understand why TC-as-a-motivator is taboo to talk about during conversations on professional goal-setting and development — especially in the freaking United States. If you want to help me, pay me :).
TC-obsessed people of Blind, what are your thoughts on having these conversations with managers? Should they only be brought up when it's time to negotiate?
