Assuming you join Facebook as a strong IC5 and you perform well, how likely is that you’ll be promoted to IC6 within one year?

  • If you can create opportunities for 3-5 engineers in your team and have good story with supportive manager and good skip, it’s possible within one year.

Thanks! It looks great and in a good way meritocratic.

On the other hand, I can imagine that in reality there is no shortage of good ideas and given the high stakes people may be overly incentivized to push their ideas over the competing ones rather than helping to do the best thing.

How common is that? If so, why do you think it’s acceptable? If not, What are the measures to prevent it from happening too often?

    • It’s THE problem that common e5s are facing, because e4s and other e5s are ambitious as well. TBH I’m also e5 trying to figure out the “solution” or break the cycle as you pointed, but don’t know how.

This also caused working overtime to prove an idea or pitch others with data or prototype, which won’t gain credit until success.

IC6 is not about working hard. 1 year is pretty ambitious

I am hired directly at IC6. My HM told me at IC6 level you are expected to create "impact" at multiple projects within the company. At IC7 level you are expected to create impact at the industry level.

I am also keen to know what makes IC6 different from IC5 and IC7.

No need to say sorry, I’m just trying to get other opinions on the bright future painted by your recruiter :)

      Thanks!

  • Close to zero chance. 1.5-2 years is more reasonable if you are indeed performing as a strong E5 very quickly.

Curious what is the difference between IC and E leveling? Same thing?
