Upleveling could actually work out with Google?

Jan 9, 2019 13 Comments

I have 3 YOE and got my master's degree in CS in us. Interview with Google went smoothly and feedback was very strong. Got myself an l3 offer and total comp is like 250+ including sign on, which I am satisfied with at this point but was hoping to get l4. I brought up upleveling thing to recruiter and hiring manager whose team I'm interested in. Both said they can back me up for that but no guarantee it will work out. I was wondering if there's possibility that upleveling is approved or just a waste of time.

Upleveling is a bad idea. You should take the offer, get promoted in 1 year and get +25% TC as a result, as well as career velocity

Getting promoted from L3 to L4 at Google is a cakewalk. I did it when I was 22. Promotions after that are order of magnitude harder though.

If your L3 offer is high already, I don't think you get a bug bump after promo to L4.

I was in the exact boat as you, got 280k TC at L3 but they wouldnโ€™t budge on level. Better to be a high paid L3 than be on the low end of L4. If youโ€™re truly underleveled then youโ€™ll get to 4 quickly, and your pay will continue to go up.

Go for the up level. It should also come with a TC bump if approved

Having a req at most companies does go through at least a skip manager, or possibly as far as the director.

Just be patient, half may be about you and half may be about larger group targets.
