Glassdoor says its around $160k on average in the Bay Area. I have hard time believing it, seems more like what senior engineers earn? What do you think?

  • That's true. Especially in companies like where they are promoting more ic culture to get things done. I know that in MS where is manager and ic has same level their salary will be in same range.

    • In amazon I heard though the higher up (7 or above) promos are only through being manager and very rare through ic path. Is that true?

That sounds about right. I know that at apple after being a manager you usually "downgrade" to ict5 (architect) even if you were lower before. In some orgs it is extremely hard to get transition from ict4 to ict5.

An average senior engineer earns (and rightfully deserves) more than an average engineering manager. Though $160k total compensation in bay area is less for either one. I think it's more like $250k

    • 250k is nowhere close to average. Also, OP is talking about salary, not stock/bonus.

    • Don't underestimate the value of putting the right team on the field, making sure they move the company forward, and anticipating the future needs and growth. I've had some terrible engineering managers and some that took the org to the next level.
