Why did Boeing never make a direct replacement for the 757? I get the MAX10 and MAX9 are trying to fill some type of void but I read recently the A321neo is outselling the MAX five to one.

The A321neo reminds me of a newer 757 every time I’ve been on one but I’m a Boeing guy through and through so I really wish they would develop a 757NG if you will.

The 787 and 757 NG could’ve been developed simultaneously just like the 767/757. Obviously there’s been a whole slew of issues with MAX production, etc. but even prior to that airlines had already placed a ton of A321neo orders.

What do y’all think? #aviation #airline

The New Midsize Airplane (NMA) is supposed to be the 757 "replacement".

The newer 737s have too much overlap with the 757 to keep the 757 around as-is.

  • The 757 got killed by the A321ceo, 757 is a great airplane but it’s too heavy and has 1980s propulsion technology (engines).

Even with a re-engine, the 57 would be much heavier than the A321neo.

What Boeing needs is a clean sheet replacement that can compete with the 321neo in terms of price, weight and fuel consumption.

I don’t even know if the nma is going to come in time. Seems like it would, with all of the other issues, be delayed through 2025+ at the earliest.

A321neo can sell a lot of orders in the interim taking that market share.

Boeing wasn’t too smart with this: it’s not like they didn’t have a LONG preview of the 767/757 decline. The 767 they made into the 787 and the 757 they just sort of threw in the towel.

There’s not enough demand. Brand new 757 replacement will need at least 2000 orders to probably break even

My best guess is because airlines are simplifying their fleets. Even among the 737, you’re going to have parts differences, but that’s minimal compared to having a completely different aircraft. Airlines carry all that inventory cost for all their spare parts - different engines, avionics, landing gears. It adds up.
