Horrible interview experience at top NYC algorithmic trading firm.
I faced a horrible interview experience when I interviewed for one of the top algorithmic trading firm (very well known name) in New York for SWE position around 5 years back. Had 2 YOE then and just graduated from Top 5 Masters in US.
After 2 rounds of super hard mathematical coding questions, I did not actually cry , but in my head, I broke down completely. All through 2 hours while trying to think of the solution, 2 interviewers kept interrupting me saying, “you really need to work hard on basics” , “for writing that messy code, people get fired here on the same day” , “ah you don’t know this”, “I thought people in masters would be expert in these concepts” , “”I mean these are very fundamental ,probably taught in 101” , “uhmm never mind, lets move on to something simple”
My coding was pretty clean & good back then too. Once I know what to do, coding would be breeze.
I did get confused in both the rounds as requirements were super vague & on trying to clarify them, would hear back “isn’t that obvious for such questions ? , "isn't that self-understood? ”
During washroom break, almost ran away from the building but realized that my personal stuff and bag was in the interviewing room. Therefore, went back for 2 more rounds of grilling. Normally, after interview people file for reimbursements, I spent close to 220$ but didn’t gather courage to ask for that.
PS: 220$ was a good amount for a student who paid most of the 60K tuition fees with student loan.
My point.
- There was no need of asking such theoretical algorithmic questions for SWE position. Quants are the people for Math.
- Regardless of my performance, you can reject me next day. Instead of humiliating me in the polished and sleek manner.
-Until today , I never understood the point of doing this. Let's assume, they wanted to test how well I perform under stress and hostile environment. I get the offer, I would still reject the offer. I am all up for working hard , overtime , late night. But would never encourage such verbal garbage.
I would like to see responses how others would have reacted.

Out of total 7 people who interviewed me. Only one was normal and calm. Couple of them were not aggressive but very sarcastic with their tone. Rest were nightmare.
Like I mentioned , I was so lost for a month, didn't feel like talking about it to anyone.
