Jane Street in 2019/2020

How is Jane Street doing these days? How is it to work as a software engineer there? I had an offer a few years ago, and was wondering if they’re still worth joining these days compared to some other shops or tech startups. I know the general consensus toward them is positive, but was wondering if any insiders have opinions.

And yet you chose dropbox? Why?

Better engineering culture and being given the opportunity to work on a specialized team that was a good fit for my interests. I joined as a new grad, and felt there were broader options to grow my career as a new grad at Dropbox.

Cool. I guess you are not one of those prestige chasers after all.

What would it take for you to refer me to Dropbox?

The pay is absurdly high nowadays (didn't seem to be the case 5 years ago), go for it.

Very few can resist the money/prestige over good project, what’s “good” anyway?

I'm quite happy here. Work is probably a bit more intense than elsewhere - 45h/week is typical, but the culture is to work quite hard while there. I think you might be surprised at the breadth of projects - we have compiler devs, for example. The pay is, frankly, the best I've seen by quite a distance, although my suspicion is that near the lower end it is pretty much on par with what the same people could make at Facebook/Google.
