Jane Street recruiter requested a phone interview for software intern position next summer. But I couldn’t find much on the web as to how to prepare. Possibly they don’t offer interview opportunities that often. Appreciate Jane Street people can chip in.
Afaik Jane Street is basically a tech company that happens to make money doing prop trading. Rather than a prop trading company that happens to utilize tech.
Lmao the free advertising
Jealous? Haha just kidding (It's funny because that's basically verbatim how SIG tries to sell itself to potential hires)
Your recruiters should’ve provided a little prep info from their website. As mentioned it’s not dissimilar from a FAANG interview process that’s on the hard side.
So leetcode? Nothing else?
Can anyone from Jane Street give insight into how high the bar is? Harder than Google / Citadel / Two Sigma / Quora etc? Easier than one or more of those?
I’d characterize the on-site as being a different type of interview faang
Questions themselves are probably easier than tech interviews but because people overfit to leetcode they’re likely to struggle more anyways
Jane St seemed easy to me but I’ve leetcoded quite a bit. Got 2 leetcode-like medium questions in an editor with tests. I solved them and passed all tests and still haven’t heard from them. Top CS school. Asking questions about the work there was hilarious because the answer was literally “we did this thing for these clients and it was interesting.” Google gave me a single phone interview question which was trickier but likely also medium. Leetcode-worthy but not on leetcode. Passed. Two sigma was similar to Jane St, except you have to write your own tests. Passed. Screw Citadel and their terrible recruiters.
So do you know why Jane Street didn’t get back to you? Yeah, I got all FLAG intern offers this summer, I would like to try something new next summer, like Jane Street, two sigma, citadel, DE Shaw...
Not sure. It’s been almost a month. It took them a month to contact me after my recruiter submitted my resume. Maybe they’re slow, or maybe they nitpicked about something.

How does Jane Street comp compare to Google (Bay Area) for the equivalent of L3/L4/L5 roles (new grad to senior SWE)? I imagine Jane Street is higher, but how much higher? Seems like the typical new grad at Google gets at least 120 base + 25/year equity + 18k bonus + signing and smaller benefits
New grade base is 175k + 50-75k target annual bonus. Target is to double TC within the first few years, but people don’t really talk about TC much
I didn’t pass the JS phone interview, I don’t know why exactly, possibly I was a little casual on syntax, but when the interviewer pointed out, I fixed right away, or my solution was not the most optimized, then what’s “most” anyway. Really appreciate Jane Streeter can chip in some insights since I have another HF interview coming up - I assumed they could be similar. A little background: I didn’t have any problems for getting into top tier high tech companies like FLAG (I got an “exceed” rating in one of FLAG this summer); I am currently a student in a T4 CS college; English is my native language; No, I’m not arrogant, quite opposite actually :) By the way, my recruiter and interviewer are both chill, I just didn’t find a way to crack him. :)

Mind sharing your experience and the interview process? How to prepare for interviews?
Can I ask if OP is doing machine learning or just regular front end/back end SWE?

Most prestigious companies to work for in tech
Phone screens are pretty standard, not much special about them
Thank you! I was actually asking how it is different from high tech. I don’t have any problems for FLAG interviews.
