Java / Python / Scala for MLE

I am thinking about changing my role from DS to MLE, and preparing leetcode for programming. Would that be the right track for preparing MLE type of coding? What langugage does MLE use often? Java, python, or scala? I used Java long time ago for my PhD work, and python / R for DS work. If needed, willing to invest in scala.

We use Python for prototyping and Scala for prod

Not FAANG but quite big, prefer not to share but if you explore a bit I think you can easily guess it ;) Scala because of the infra: a lot of Spark and another tools so good to keep it together. Also tou can port for example xgboost to mllib easily.

Why are you moving from DS to MLE? Are they treating you like data engineer?

LinkedIn kVBR87 OP Aug 23, 2019

No, in my current role, there is lots of model building tasks w/ lots of data extraction work, but I wanna transform my career, cuz I feel - 1. DS title is confusing. 2. I am now prototyping models - I wanna to do more end to end from building models and deploy in production environment.

From my point of view I switched from DS to MLE because I didn’t like to build some models and then give it to SWE so they will integrate it. Tbh my position is an SWE now but I work to ML-related problems.

Exactly! Same thoughts here!

Don’t you guys think even if you are a MLE, you will end up focusing on one portion/module?

Why can’t you do transition inside the company?

LinkedIn kVBR87 OP Aug 23, 2019

Considering that as well. Exploring both internally and externally.

What's the plan, I am also trying to do something similar. I work on ML model building but not deployment. Currently a DS but want to move to MLE.

I am setting up one. First wanna understand tech stack in different companies and interview questions, second need to put together a list of companies and positions with priorities, meanwhile preparing for interview, reaching out for referral. That’s what I thought the current steps. Plan length is 3 - 6 months.

Sounds good. Pm me if you want to do something together. I am not in Bay though
