That is why Insaid if it's like Google, their SRE perhaps are even more knowledge then normal SWE.
There is nothing wrong in any role, every role requires some expertise and you can definitely Excel in that.
It is just that you should know what is the reality of the so called SRE role in companies today, do you get to implement cool tools etc or will you just build some dummy Jenkins automation and be on-call supporting application code which developer team owns and all your role would be in case of an issue just reach out to the dev team.
Early on in your career, choose a good role and don't chase money just because a devops role pays you 4-5 lpa more.
Work for 1-2 yers, gain knowledge and then decide which role you like
I myself saw what you're saying after interviewing for some of these companies. Two different companies might have two very different meanings of this term. Deliberate discussions with the hiring manager and the other team members will help you a long way in judging the role. Engineering blogs is also something that reflects the same.
