Describing My Role

Apr 7 10 Comments

So I landed at Deloitte after a career transition to tech. Was brought in as a "data scientist" working in the cloud. My day to day is much closer to a data engineer and cloud engineer. Mostly because a lot of the cloud guys kind of suck and data engineering is a pretty niche skill set for a place like Deloitte. So if you want it done right you do it yourself. I'm the data science team lead now. After 12 months of building data pipelines I'm going to build my first model(at Deloitte). So hopefully I can say I have also deployed a model to production. I've built a lot of generic analytics and visualizations before.

The problem being I have no idea how to describe my role on my resume. I cannot be the only guy in tech who has done a bit of this and a bit of that.

In cases like this I tailor my resume to the company or role I want. This is harder if you’re younger. Create a master resume with all details and projects, then simplify to just “data engineer” or “software engineer” or whatever depending on what role you’re applying to.

I think the master resume is a good idea. Save for... The guy I had to interview who sent me a 4 page long resume with every project he had ever worked. He was a career contractor/consultant. There were a lot of projects lol

Yeah in the vast majority of cases 1-2 pages is more than enough unless you’re a PhD with many publications. But having an N page master copy is a great idea.

Describe your role based on what you want to do next. If you’re angling to be an engineer then go for data/infra Eng, or if you want to be a DS then say that
