Advice for someone who is entering the SWE field soon?

Aug 12, 2018 7 Comments

I eventually want to get into FAANG but I am not too smart. I am down to work hard and do what it takes to get there. What should my action plan be for grinding LC/CTCI/PIE/EPI?

  • As an entry level SWE, join a startup or small established company. Work on a variety of projects, including personal side projects or open source if there isn't enough variety at work. Interview at FANG in 3-5 years at a more senior level.

if someone can DO this I can’t imagine a better way to become a solid engineer. The path is super rocky though. Most people just sit with their job and rest. Outside world, new technologies aren’t their concern.

    • For someone who enjoys the work and technology for its own sake, this is actually the path of least resistance, and the only hard part is knowing when they have enough experience to move up to another company.

For someone who finds the work tedious and doesn't want to think about coding when they get home, yeah, this won't be easy. They'd probably be happier in another job anyway.

Learn who is good at your company. Keep in touch with them. When there is an exodus ask to join.
