Are tech workers as rich as they think we are?
I am currently working in a hardware company in a software role(C++ application dev) in India. I am planning to pursue a Masters degree abroad, preferably in Canada owing to a few factors like better chance to get PR(vs US), good quality of life, low crime rate, scenic beauty etc. I will have around 2-3 yoe by the time I start (aiming for 2021 or 2022) - don't have an admit yet. The universities I will be aiming for will be UBC and UWaterloo. Assuming an admit in either of these for a general MS CS course (not specialised in stuff like ML or networking), what is the job situation in Canada like? I have heard the overall pay is less as compared to the US but so is the cost of living right? There are fewer opportunities for Software Dev, but competition is less too right? What do UBC MS grads make on average? Even if the pay is good enough to live a decent life, I am all in. One major advantage I feel is that I won't have the H1B visa sword hanging above my head like in the US. Also, given the current covid situation, how has it impacted the jobs and the pay in Canada. My main aim to go for a Masters is only for better quality of life and live in a foreign country. If this doesn't go to plan, I might as well switch jobs in India and try for an MBA in India. #engineer #canada #jobs #masters #ubc #vancouver #toronto #montreal #advice #career #ms
If you choose UBC, Vancouver is expensive as balls. One of the worst cost of living to average salaries ratio in all of Canada. 1 bedrooms are around 2k/month and new grad salaries are around 70k/year. If you can make it into a FAANG or equivalent you can get up to 100-130k but they’re very competitive given the number of academic institutions.
In that case, do you recommend US as a better place for career overall? What are the chances of getting a job in the US after MS in Canada
I can’t be 100% sure of this because I’ve only lived in Canada but I feel like jobs are more competitive here. I think this is because there are fewer jobs due to Canada being a smaller market and there are also more graduates because university is heavily subsidized and cheaper compared to the US. That being said, I know several people who have immigrated to Canada to study (international tuition is usually less than in the US) and then get work visas for internships or full time jobs in the states.
When I graduated 7-8yrars ago...avg pay was 70-80k Cad.... Now I am sure it's gone up by some percentage. It's depends on company you join. If you join small company then less pay,if you join bigger MNC then pay is good. If you join FAANG then it's again much better. UBC is good place to study and Uwaterloo as well. Both are competitive universities in Canada so little bit difficult to get in. Renting in Waterloo is cheap. Also student renting is always cheap because of sharing the cost so even in Vancouver you wouldn't be paying higher amount. Plus there are always option to go little bit far away with less cheaper houses. Us is better option in term of money and lot of opportunities. But Canada has best quality of life. If you want to convert money and send back home them US is better but if you want enjoy life in Canada then even Canadian salaries are enough to save and enjoy, buy house etc except Vancouver area. You will have to face immigration issues like rest of us here if you decided to go to US after master in Canada. You need to get H1B sponsored which would be difficult. You can go to US after Canadian citizen on TN or H1B.
It’s very competitive for fresh grads. Salary will be around 60-70K CAD for freshers. Right now is not a good time to move. Asses in 2021. Affordability of everything is a huge issue here.
