Fresh PhD (6 months of exp) got an offer with 140k base 150k/4 stock 25k sign up bonus Bay area L4 It seems that a number of phds are getting these types of offers based on levelsfyi... Feel bad and happy, happy to go to Google but bitter about the TC, I feel demotivated already 😔 I'm thinking about my next jump already
PhD or not end of the day your just a code monkey for them. Slog it out like the 70k other Google insects working there or join a smaller company that truly values your skills.
The stock isn't doing anything either its a double whammy
Not doing anything is much better than declining
Be grateful to get 200k+ TC with only 6 months experience..you probably should have gotten less
6 months after PhD ain't like after undergrad school
How old are you?
You still only have 6 months experience. If it was that bad, you wouldn't have taken it. You have to start somewhere, so forget it and move on.
Maybe my expectations were unrealistic?
Probably, I expected to be given the earth when I started. You go through education with top grades, pass everything and expect top results, that isn't real life always. Also, there are people with 10 yoe on you, what do you think is higher value (assuming you aren't working in a research team which specializes in your field).
Yeah that's an absolute low-ball. You should have interviewed multiple companies to get competitive offers
Already thinking in a year I should do another round, Google is my preferred place though.. Why Google why.. How TC @ Nvidia?
My TC is 270, was 320 first year with bonus. But I negotiated hard and had competing offers. PhD grad as well. I don't prefer super big companies yet (like Google) until I reach L5 or 6 probably. May look next year or so.
Totally New Here, but I will say, I generally always low-ball the initial offer, esp if they didn't name their expectation of salary upfront. Most have said solid responses - I feel the only lacking is the negotiation, you don't have to accept you can always ask for more and say why you were worth it. Since you already accepted that's not an option anymore. My advice honestly is outperform everyone around you, take the extra work, make sure your scrum manager/ management knows your name - generally offering help and solving problems for them. I have given out raises after first 60-90days if they have proven value and budget shows I can.
Got rejected by Uber, Msf was even a lower offer so I just went with Google, I had no leverage really.
Well, that tells me everything @op. Initially I see a person who feels he is worth more, but here you said you have no leverage. What is your value proposition? Because if you are worth more and willing to spend the next 3-6months proving it, you will get that raise to where you want to be. I have no doubt in my mind, that if you show you are more valuble then what you are being paid, and then set a meeting in 90days for a review. And can present it accordingly, you will def get a bump. I used to spend a lot of time teaching my interns and new hires this. "The only thing stopping you from getting paid more, is you. I want to pay you all as much as I possibly can, I truly do, but I need to see the work as to why you deserve that increase." Stay focused the next 90 days and do everything extra you can. "No Leverage" is meaningless, you have all the leverage you need. You're published, you're a top 10, you have a strong work ethic, you just need to learn to leverage yourself with confidence and negotiations.
Ok I have a theory. Since tech salaries have jumped like crazy in the past 7-8 years, lots of folks decided to pursue this lucrative career path. So now, we have an influx of fresh grads of all educational levels. All competing for a limited number of entry-level jobs. You’re the second person to post recently with a PhD who got lowballed by Google. Recent or fresh grad. So, probably not a coincidence I think.
I've seen 2-3 fresh phds on levelsfyi with a similar TC, didn't know it was that common. But won't that cause higher attrition rates? I'm already thinking about my next jump which is bad
Well, hopefully by then you would’ve gotten promoted if you’re a high performer. Or if you’re not a high performer, then you leave willingly (non-regrettable attrition). At least, that’s how I think they think about it.
Are you a CS phd? Is it a SWE or research scientist?
CS PhD, SWE title ... Scientist get more?
I would say roughly the same (or even less)? Any research scientist here?
Thats a lot of ones first year working. Get the fxxx outta here.

Why are women naked in gym?
No worries. After one year or two just make a switch. You’ll double your TC
My plan for now even though I want to stay at Google
Which companies will offer double tc ?
