Just moved to Bay Area for a new job. Any general advice?

This is my 1st post here so go easy on me.

I am mainly looking for advice on how to make the best use of living in the Bay. It already sucks that I had to move from SoCal due to lack of job opportunities. Want to network with professionals. I'm interested in product managment, fintech (MFE/MBA) so I am looking for networking events and meetups that help me get more insight in these spaces.

On the personal side, I am a male in my mid 20s and looking to make new friends and date women. I know NYC is the best but I'm here now so I want some pointers from you nerds on where to look and just general awareness when it comes to things and people in the Bay.

Any general advice or pointers are welcome.

Branch out and find community outside of the tech world. San Francisco is a completely different city once you get to know some of the many artists, circus performers, or other interesting communities.

I lived here for year and a half and was pretty miserable, but then I moved in with a magician and started running cabarets and other circus-y shows. Now I travel around the country stage managing for burlesque performers on the weekends, which is a great contrast to my software engineering day job.

Folsom street fair is today, go check it out! There’s no better introduction to the alternative side of San Francisco than that :-P

  • Remember that SF is not LA :) everything here closes at around 2AM. When I lived in Miami, my nights didn’t even start till 1AM! There are a few after hours places, but they are fairly shady. I wouldn’t go there by myself. Depending on the scene you are into, there are a lot of bars and a few night clubs. Overall, Bay Area is a lame place. I empathize for you. SoCal is so much better!

I am here for a day and already regretting the decision. I will give it a year since I'm yet to start my new job and maybe that gives me some satisfaction.

I wanna meet people. Professionally or otherwise. Everything else would fall into place once you're with the right crowd of people.
