Just told my Google recruiter about passing Facebook’s onsite and it backfired

I passed HC for an L3 SETI role about 2 weeks ago but I’ve been stuck in team matching ever since. I recently found out from Facebook that I passed their onsite interviews and they’d wanna give me an offer for an E4 SWE role. I told my Google recruiter this in the hopes things could be sped up but he told me straight up I should take the Facebook offer lol. Coincidentally he’s also leaving for Facebook in a week or 2. I’m just gonna keep delaying as much as possible though since I really want Google. For any Googlers, do you think it’s possible to re-interview for a SWE role or have my interviews re-reviewed by HC for a SWE role? I was thinking it could open more doors for me in team matching if I’m successful.

Why would you bring that up?

Clever Devices nzbU08 OP Mar 18, 2019

Others mentioned Google recruiters can speed up team matching if you’re in late stages with other companies. That was my hope here

Oath Atinlay Mar 18, 2019

Could have told you that wouldn’t work

What’s wrong with your recruiter’s advice?

Clever Devices nzbU08 OP Mar 18, 2019

Nothing I guess. Just was hoping it could help speed up team matching as others have experienced.

The recruiter seems very unprofessional. How can a recruiter advise an engineer to take up a job about which he has no clue. Just because he is leaving, doesn't mean it would always be right for you.

Clever Devices nzbU08 OP Mar 18, 2019

To be fair to him, his reasoning was that he didn’t wanna jeopardize my situation with Facebook since there’s apparently no space for me at Google

Team matching can take months in some cases and Facebook wont want to wait that long

Amazon bayyzoes Mar 18, 2019

Seems fishy. I’d wait for the recruiter’s replacement.

lol wtf are these comments? SETI is glorified QA role and not on par with SWE *and* FB upleveled you. and no team is jumping to match you you should thank your recruiter and not look back (source: ex-FB/google)

IBM PTSD Mar 18, 2019

No. The point is if he would have suggested the same if he weren't leaving Google.

Uber mr mango Mar 18, 2019

he would then have a selfish incentive (ie one not aligned w OP) to not suggest it. how is that better

Nordstrom Nepotism Mar 18, 2019

Your role won't change with a new recruiter. So you will be comparing glorified QA vs a real SWE role. Why wait for Google? Would you really prefer SETI at G vs SWE at F?

he gave you good advice

Take his advise.

L4 at FB. Chuck Google. Go make some big bucks

I've had dramatically different experience with different recruiters in the same situation. Don't believe others who tell you "there's nothing a recruiter can do" because yes there is; they can reach out to more teams, they can ping people for responses generally be more proactive etc.

Clever Devices nzbU08 OP Mar 18, 2019

Thanks for the reply! It may be a blessing in disguise to get a new recruiter. Hopefully they can get things going better than the current one.
