I sent in an application at Cisco for mid level software engineer and got a response with an hour for a HackerRank assessment. There were three questions. First question was easy, given the position of 2 queens on a chess board, determine if they can attack each other. Second question was straightforward, given a string like (ab)2(a)3 expand it to ababaaa. It was easy but when I went to select the language it wouldn't select anything other than python. I haven't coded in Python since college and I wasn't about to go learn python in an hour for a HackerRank, especially one for Cisco. I left it blank and wrote "I could have coded this in Java but I'm being forced to do this in Python, so I won't even try". Third question was subtract two numbers that are given as Linked Lists. Coded it, got my test case working. Went to submit it and found that one of the HackerRank test cases was failing because there was an error in the Driver function. The driver function would throw an error trying to set up one of the linked lists. So my function wasn't tested and would just fail. So just ended up submitting the code with one failed test case. Also, I found it incredibly stupid how HackerRank doesn't show you all the test cases. It keeps half of them locked. Makes no sense since I can just print the input parameters myself and figure out the test case. So I don't know if this was HackerRank's fault or Cisco's fault for how they configured these questions but this was probably the worst online assessment I've ever taken. Don't worry it's Cisco. They're not a hyped company working on cutting edge tech where everyone wants to work at. Even if you hadn't answered anything you'd get an offer.
If you were to gauge yourself, how do you think you do? Also you could have written psuedo code in second question since they may want to check if you are open to learning new things
I hadn't considered the pseudo code option, I was just so frustrated I didn't even feel like moving forward with that question. I got 2/3 right (not counting the failing test case) and could have gotten the third if I had the option for java.
Lmao took one for an infrastructure at some other company. And you have to login to a server and do some stuff. Lol the folders they were talking about were not there nor did I have write access tried using sudo and it said this command is prohibited. Even chmod was prohibited.
Sometimes these take homes have dumb glitches, I took one for a medium level company and it straight up didn't work. I notified them and they said they would fix it and redo but I had already accepted another offer by then
That string question is like 4 lines of apython.
