Should I knowingly work slower?

So this keeps happening to me

At the beginning of sprint I receive tasks like everyone else (maybe a bit more since I am full-stack dev)

I usually work through them fairly quickly and in between sprint I keep getting getting tasks/bugs injected into my board

Initially I didn't had any problems with it since I was new to the company and that extra work helped me learn about the codebase etc

But now its getting frustrating since now I am always busy working on tasks.

I started ignoring the tasks added to me in between the sprint and the PM was cool with it (at least he seem cool with it), then came the performance review cycle and I got to know that I have lot of backlogs at the end of each sprint since I stopped doing those mid sprint injections. I tried to explain to the manager the reason but as per him now this cycle I won't be getting any salary adjustment. So basically all this work for nothing.

I am frustrated and want to leave the job but seeing the market and since I'm on visa I can't.

What should I do now?

I always start very slow and work harder only if I need to. That way, it’s easy to look like I’m trending upwards.

This is very wise will do this from now on in next company.... This is my biggest mistake to have shown excitement and heavy throughput on the first week of work

If you are bound by the visa it sounds like you will have to cover those injections if you like it or not until you reach a state when you are not bound to your employer by your visa anymore.

It's tough, but you have to set work expectations in the beginning. Basically, don't burn yourself out, even if you're excited. Companies will just see a down turn in productivity, even if you were doing an unsustainable workload and just slowed to a reasonable pace.

It's annoying, but that's how it is.

I think one can always leave but its hard, so thats why the employers will exploit your visa dependencies etc
