if i answer x, my offered salary will be x+ epsilon. if i mark up, will he disqualify me for being dishonest? this is my dilemma.
If you donāt tell they will give you an extreme lowball to get it out of you
I thought they normally ask your expectation, not current salary Rather tell them your expectation than your actual salary
Which company asked you btw? Personally, never in my life will I answer that question again with a number. Instead ask in return, what is the typical package for this role that your company gives. If they try to dodge you, just keep repeating the question in different ways. Donāt give your own number. If they are hardball, they would come back with a very low offer to make you give them your current salary. Donāt! Just say āhow can I do that given my experience, responsibility for this role, and current market value.ā If they ask you again for your salary, donāt, just donāt.
What if they say "good bye, son"?
You can either say good bye as well, or play even harder. Say āwhat do you plan to achieve by letting this negotiation fall throughā. Or āwhat are we trying to achieve hereā. If in any case they donāt budge, I personally will say good bye to them. But it depends on few variables, specially your visa status and how badly you want to work for that company.
Asking for salary is illegal in California and New York I believe.
Yup. Why would you want to be anywhere else anyway, right?
