So hey, I once applied for some job in Facebook and didn't even get a no thank you. But just last week somehow a recruiter emails me out of the blue saying - hey we're hiring for production engineers (essentially DevOps/SRE) in whatever many teams there are there. I talked to recruiter today and they describe a tech screen with leetcode and some sort of linux skills test.
Now I've been coding and leading dev teams in consulting and helping devops teams on consulting for like 20 years. I despise all the algorithmic shite that's out there, it is never useful for any SRE roles. I've had a successful open source project which I think the fanciest algorithm I used was use of stack sorting where recursion was too deep, oh and judicious use of prebuilt Dictionaries for frequent lookup. I can get by on linux but all the console there doesn't get me off - but I am really, really good on debugging managed code in whatever language.
I also don't use Facebook proper (I am on Whatsapp) and think it's pretty damn evil in what it is doing out there to humanity
Plus I got this fancy new job at Snowflake which I love.
But! I keep hearing Facebook pays really well. Paying really well sounds really good. My capitalist self can handle a lot for good $$$.
So! Is it worth to buckle down and try whatever that leetcode shit or is the SRE job total shit like it is at many other places??
