As title says, I am from Kansas and I am about to get a new opportunity that requires me to relocate to Chicago. My wife is non-IT and we have a toddler. My wife earns about 45-50K. And I earn about 120K (current compensation). Haven't heard the final compensation from the new role.

I am not sure how much we should be earning to live a comfortable life. We have a house which is more than 3K sqft.. mortgage is little over 3K and we have daycare which about 1600/month.. with this lifestyle how much should I expect for a base pay for Chicago? Since the RSU won’t be something I will be able to use immediately for a day to day expenses..

Also where should I be looking for houses for good schools.

Any help would be appreciated.

TIA

#relocation #chicago

EDIT: This position is hybrid so, I will probably be going to office twice a week

Where are you commuting to? It makes a difference.

Oak Park as recommended is very nice and has good schools but also is expensive. Berwyn is close and honestly just as nice (not as sure about the schools). Naperville is also decent.

Neighborhoods in the city that might be good: Jefferson Park or Garfield Ridge/Clearing you’d probably be able to find a house at your budget and they’re safe but a bit of a commute, also hope you like airplanes. Closer to the city I’d try West Loop (expensive) or Pilsen/Bridgeport (less expensive).

I think they have their office in Downtown but this role is hybrid and probably two days a week I have to go to office ... I will check those neighborhoods.

Yeah Chicago’s public transit is very hub and spoke, so if you’re commuting downtown you can stay near any metra line and most CTA lines (any cta line if you’re feeling adventurous lol). Makes more sense to live in the burbs given your situation, feel free to reply here with questions or DM and I’ll be happy to help out too

  • Chicago is quite expensive especially if you're moving from KC. It's hard to say what TC you should be looking at with your lifestyle because I don't know if you're trying to save a lot or living paycheck to paycheck.

If you're looking for a 3k sq ft place in the city you're going to be paying a lot more than what you're paying now.

Take a look at Oak Park if you want to stay near the city, good schools and more likely to find a home.

If you want to be further away and don't mind commuting I would recommend Naperville. It had a nice downtown area and but the train commute is over an hour one way.

    • Ahh, thats good feedback. Ive been remote the entire time I lived here and the few times I took the train it was over an hour each time.

Maybe things are a bit different during workdays, I'd listen to liai15 over my own experience on that.

During the recruiter calls, i was told the base would be more than 160K which is more than my current compensation and they have bonus + rsu. Thanks for those suggestions. I will take a look at them
