What do you do after giving notice?

Apr 29 12 Comments

I gave my two weeks notice today and manager at first asked if I could stay 2 more weeks (so effectively 1 month), but my new job is starting in 3 so obviously was not gonna say yes. Manager then asked me to give a list of current projects and asked me to finish several of them within the notice period. This is my first time quitting but my understanding is that in the US giving notice is a courtesy and afterwards we should primarily focus on transferring the work (so that to maximize continuation) instead of getting squeezed out the last bit of value (which by the cold and demanding tone of manager seems like what he is doing). What do you all think? #tech

Do whatever you want, they're not gonna go thru the effort of firing you. Your manager should be more respectful with that in mind.

I have the same q’s. Am I supposed to KT someone on my team on how to do my leftover work? What if no one on my team knows how to do the work because I’m the only specialist on the team? And we’re already extremely understaffed? 💀 I literally don’t know how to approach this without burning a bridge and being awkward

Depending on your relationship with the boss, for good boss who I may work for in the future I will do my best to wrap up work and may stay till the Friday before the week I start elsewhere. For an asshole boss I will just goof off and let him deal with the mess in that two weeks.

Don’t be surprised if he end up going to your new place and be your boss in the future again though.
