Dark secrets about tech industry

Let me tell you young boys and girls trying to make it here

This is a cut throat place. You have to keep reinventing yourself. The experience you had before will very soon become irrelevant.

Please become a developer/programmer only if you are really wanting to. Don’t do it because it pays. By the time you reach 40 you are going to get burnt out and hate your life choices.

Young girls and boys from India particularly who want to do their masters only for visa think VERY carefully. If you don’t have even a slight liking for this profession don’t do your masters. You will be stuck in visa queue forever and life will become hell in your 40s.

Do what you like and you will create your own path. If you want to be around tech there are still several options like product, sales, marketing etc.

Don’t get influenced by hoodie wearing millionaire kids in their 20s that movies make you believe. There are people genuinely passionate about programming and they make it here. If you are not then this is not for you.

Good luck.

Single Indian average looking men should literally avoid doing masters.

Once you come as a single guy in the US, you are less likely to find love here considering the horrible male to female ratio for Indians. You will literally become hopeless as you rely on arrange marriage.

Better to find a GF in India and then do your Masters together as a couple or just come on L1 visa as a married couple.

When you come here in the US as a single dude you will have lots of mental health issues due to loneliness.

    • Haha. Can relate. Have you seen a group of Indian guys in a pub drinking together. Try to make some move. In the end they all leave together and go to Shaan/Shah for eating Tandoori when drunk

    • I think one of the problems here is this posts is around being indian. Stop being so self-center in the race you are. Nobody gives a shit.

What people gives a shit is if you fits in this country.. if you came here to live like in india you r fucked. This is not i dia, this is not a fun country with parties that last 7 days, cows in the highways and your extended 100 family members doing dinners on holidays. This is usa, you came here to make money and work in something you can't work anywhere . Full stop

Just curious, are you in your 40s hating life or in your 20s using 100 dollar bills as toilet paper?

Doing “what you love” is bullshit we need to stop selling to kids. Find something you’re good at, and learn to enjoy being good at something.

I’m an introvert, unless people are receptive and conversational I have a hard time talking to new people. But I’m really good at sales, and that’s what I do. I’ve gotten a great deal of happiness and pride from crushing my sales numbers for years. I also get to play to my strengths of planning and problem solving.

If I could choose to do anything in the world would it be talking to people all day? Probably not. But I still enjoy my job and what I’ve accomplished, and I’m compensated very well for it. Most people can’t “do what they love” and make a good living doing it. Anyone can do what they’re good at get happiness from knowing they’re successful at it.

@noll there is nothing impractical about what 3 idiots preaches. It says chase competence, not success. When you chase competence, success will follow.

      That is true 100%.

    • @achieveFTW not true 100% but 50%. Chase competence in a skill that ‘has some scope of earning money’, only then success will follow. yes, that skill can be as bizarre as playing video games for viewers like pewdiepie does but only if a platform like youtube exists in the first place where you can advertise to millions of people. there are plenty of competent skilled workers in India’s unorganized sector say construction workers but they rarely are as successful people doing software. hope you don’t bring up the point that success is intrinsic not extrinsic as that is a different debate
