Tech culture vs Gaming culture

For people who have worked in both, is their a material difference? Is gaming way more bro culture? ...I've mostly only worked in Riot Games since starting and I'm curious to see what others think

If you’re a straight (white mostly) bro and can hold your liquor (and other chemicals) while working 18 hour work days for lesser pay with no guarantee of a job from month to month go for it. After 10 years working in that space I bailed.

@Act2016 I think you are totally right that you are probably going to end up working on ads or something similar. I work in Ads and I don’t give a shit about ads, however the challenges and complexities you end up working on is the really interesting part.

  • I would definitely say companies like Riot Games are a lot more bro culture-y due to Leage culture compared to tech companies. I wouldn't say Riot is conservative, but i'd just say a lot of tech companies are a lot more liberal and open.

    • I love how people in this thread making comments without actually working in both places. Unless Facebook person actually has worked in both places it's just whacky to somehow believe it. Did you read it in an article on Kotaku? Is that the basis of your knowledge?

Aura, that sounds like a pretty serious allegation. I mean... If it's true you've got to believe that the external law firm Seyfarth Shaw who investigated the claim and are purely incented to protect Riot from illegal action are so incompetent or self-destructive that they would for some completely implausible reasob take the side of this manager who they have no connection with and don't even know. Why would that law firm be so desperate to ruin their own reputations for this individual?

Wow. Riot are you serious? The company hired to provide legal defend base in an alligation case takes the company side and after thouroughly investigated what the accuser can do with the company they decided that they not take serious counter action? You are living in an illusion, if you really think that you wrote...

  • Totally. We work ‘hard’ as in ‘a lot’ but that doesn’t mean we work smart of efficiently.

Some of the things people get away with here would have gotten them in trouble at FAANG.

Google spending a spring on documentation? Seems like a lot of time considering 70% of the time the documentation is shit!

    • Amazon what’s your TC?

Now what is your TC is you eliminate all stock?

Now what’s 80% of that remaining TC?

Are you happy with that as your total? If so, then sure, apply.

  • I have worked in both. Broish cultures can be part of either type of company. The main differences I find between the two have to do with the type of professionalism and social groups. At game studios, there's a more laid back type of professionalism. More people tend to be social, with more social events. Outside of the game industry, I find a less social company culture that does not usually have as close knit social circles. Since people in gaming tend to have common hobbies, there's more for them to naturally talk about.

  • I worked hard to become a game dev and then went to work in tech instead 😂. Tech culture is amazing. Now I’m an ar engineer. You can basically just bring your game dev knowledge to tech and have the better culture where you aren’t underpaid and working in shitty conditions.

Just be sure you join the right team. Ads, storage infra, etc, are no place for a game dev. It’s a good thing tech companies are going all in on ar/vr now and need people like us.
