I'm about to start managing other PMs (1-2 in H1, closer to 5 by EO 2022). I think I'll be OK, but would love to learn from other managers here about common pitfalls, tips etc.

I've led and managed people before (military, mentoring capacity, interns etc.), but not PMs.

Edit: this won't be at Google.

When managing PM’s, empower them to own their own backlog and product decisions. Don’t step in. Don’t do it. The only time it’s appropriate is if there is a strategic direction that needs to be pivoted. Be their mentor and guide, and continuously sketch out a vision for the future of the product- but let them have their own vision for it, and incorporate that vision into yours. Celebrate and highlight where their vision is connected to customers and value, and reinforce that quality PM skill. Give them loads of opportunity to present, speak to, and own the strategy.

Don’t be the same manager to all your reports. Each will have different needs and aspirations. It is not like raising kids, you don’t need to be completely impartial to them. You can give more opportunities to those who ask for them and earn them and promote them faster and give them challenging work.
