Facebook people, don’t you think facebook completely failed in their mission of making the world “more open and connected” and instead it’s one of the main reasons for how divided US right now?

To be honest I feel really really scaried because if we learnt anything it’s that the only thing Mark Zuckerberg cares about is money and absolutely incapable of seeing the bigger picture.

To be clear I do not critize fb employees, I do critize fb leadership, their total lack of responsibility and do think they are unfit to run a company which has so much power/influence. Looks like no one really cares how the platform is used as long as it gives money.

Even Twitter got some balls to stand up against Trump, whereas fb pretends it’s not their business what happens on their platform.

Are there any internal discussions about this? Do people still think facebook is the solution and not part of the problem?

  • What is your ask? You want Mark to be the arbitrator of truth for everyone and tell you what you can and cannot say?

I also agree with Facebook. But, admittedly I am still a bit bitter about their past censorship decisions.

    • Arbiter of truth? Go read up on objective truth and fact based information.
A lot of left/right bullshit would be halted if facebook actually implemted objective truth.

Before talking about FB, we should talk about YouTube first. Things are not better on YouTube, and we don't have good solution too.

    • I don’t meant comments. I mean the actual videos it hosts where Trump gives out plenty of misinformation and advocates for violence.

Once YT starts fact checking I will unsubscribe. I don’t care what Google employees think is good. I want access to different point of views.

  • I really don’t think FB should censor speech or fact check, it’s extremely hard to do correctly and is a slippery slope. We should provide a platform where people are free to voice their thoughts and opinions. If those are misleading/false information, opposing voices on the platform should call that out. FB shouldn’t be regulating speech and should preserve freedom of speech.

Of course there are exceptions to this such as inciting violence and harm against a community and those should be removed from the platform.

Also, I don’t see why you think FB divided the US? FB is just a communication medium, it’s the people who use it that have caused the division. You don’t blame the creators of radio and television or cell phones for the horrible ways in which they are sometimes used, do you?

      OP
OK, here’s what I think. Regardless whether they made money or not, what they did is irresponsible and wrong (whatever that means).

Now, in case if they make money, the big difference would be how they spend this money. If they return it back to the society in one way or another, it would be one thing. But if they spend that money on the growth to generate even more money (for the sake of becoming more powerful or whatever is their final goal, if they have any) - that’s totally separate thing. From what I understand we are in the universe where the latter is true.

To give you an extreme analogy - imagine a mad scientist who is the only person who can save humanity from extinction, but in order to function properly he needs to, I don’t know, pee every day on the street. Regardless who he is peeing on the street is wrong, but it is a requirement/necessity for him to save the humanity.

Basically this means that if there’s an evidence that overall what they doing is beneficial to society - I’m fine with what they are currently doing. But we need to remember that if mad scientist demanded killing one person each day - we would at least think before agreeing to that, so there is a limit to how far you can go. Maybe what Facebook did can not be compensated, it is really hard to tell right now, so I don’t know.

Let me know if that makes sense.

OP is typical example of clueless person. Doesn't understand the problem, has no solution, blames others for not solving it when others do not even have to solve it.

I've worked at FB for close to 6 years and in many decision making I've seen fb leadership take a decision which is beneficial to the community even if it leads to lower revenue. So keep your opinions to yourself when you don't have a full picture
