Hello Folks,

I'm looking for some advice whether to Stay in DevOps or study hard/grind leetcode to get a job at Faang type companies.

Did anyone face this dilemma?

My motivation is purely financial, since SWE jobs in FAANG clearly pay 40% more, why should we stay in DevOps.

  • I'm in Cloud/DevOps now. The salaries are effectively capped -- I don't see *many* salaries for our position go above $200K. However, SWE roles don't really have a cap (in comparison).

If your motivation is purely financial, make the switch. (That's my goal for 2022 as well.) The skills you built up won't go to waste -- SWEs at high levels are still expected to know systems design, OSes, CI/CD, etc

    • I think FAANG cloud architects and devops roles go over 200k easily . I also want to switch but find it challenging to self learn coding while working with difficult customers as a cloud architect.

    • I don't know about easily.
I've seen some SRE roles in the 200s years ago for FAANG companies, but those salaries seem to have actually dropped recently. (Whereas SWE salaries seem to have only increased recently).

Switch to networking, less harsh and better pay, sometimes more than SWE

  • PE and SRE at fb and g get paid a lot. Not sure why you think they are 40 percent lower than swe

Yes, but I heard for PE and SRE interviews we first have to pass SWE rounds, like Technical coding rounds, is it not true?

    • It is true but that is the dev in devops. If you can't do dev then you are just ops?

  • If you want the money, then switch.

Can you share what exactly you do in your devops role? Is it actual devops?
