Is waiting for expected promotion worth it?

Dec 13, 2021 9 Comments

Want to eventually move from finance to fintech/tech. Currently analyst level and manager has dropped that I will get promotion to associate at annual review in May 22 (ahead of schedule, will be under 2yoe). I think I have some fintech offers coming soon with a decent increase in TC. However I also am mindful that promotions in finance are a relative big deal compared to other industries since there’s only 5-6 titles available.

Question is- is it worth waiting for promotion.. or does it not matter in scheme of things?

TC ~100k
Yoe ~1.5

  • we’re quite literally in the same boat at the same YOE and I just accepted an offer for a much higher TC at the expense of an upcoming promotion/yearly bonus.

I actually am in the same boat, also took the higher TC. My rationale is that we work for money not a title, I’d rather get 2x the salary of a person L+1 from me. Just work hard and get the next level at the new company, should be only a year or two delay on your promo.

Congrats on the new role! I think my rationale if I waited for promo would be to leverage new title to get bigger increase in TC at a new company. Seems like consensus is it doesn’t matter enough to make it worth it

Yea I’m definitely in the same boat as you, it’s a hard decision. I think if the promotion led to the same TC as the new role, perhaps there’s an argument. But passed that, hard to say there is one. Since when you get a new promotion you may want to stay at the company for atleast one more year to ‘prove you can do that role’. And at that point your losing a whole ton of money.

Congrats on your new role also! I think we will regret not taking the TC :)

Yea, be a little flexible with dates and if you get promoted at the new company you can make it look like you joined at that role if you like (or at any point afterwards)
