I've been at Google for 5 months now (since May), the imposter syndrome is still here. The first three months, my team put me on a feature that a coworker held my hand through. Now I'm fixing bugs that don't really teach me about the system. Motivation to work through the day is not there. I feel like my team thinks I'm a lemon and I'm starting to feel like one.

Any other Googlers felt the same way after 5 months?

EDIT:
Level: L3

Wow! Thank you for all the support, it really turned my day upside down. With so many people saying they feel the same way right now, I would like to start a group chat so that maybe we can support each other through Blind or maybe even beyond for those who feel comfortable. Message me and I will include you :)

EDIT 2:
Made the chat, feel free to join!

EDIT 3:
Again thank you all for the support, we created a discord so that people who would like to to work together or even just hang out and support each other can do so. Feel free to join and invite others :)

Unfortunately, that’s what happens when you use leetcode to recruit SWE’s. They are good problem solvers but not grown up enough to solve real world engineering challenges on their own. Kudos to your courage to admit your “imposter syndrome”. Companies need to reinvent their hiring process so when someone is hired they don’t go through this hell of ramping up!

@alash dude! Yeah the productivity is so low it feels like putting in the extra hours is so annoying because someone could just show you beginning to end and I'd save many hours! It's also got me feeling like not caring, although I know that when I do get it that life will be awesome and not depressing.

Pretty much the same difficulties here. With the added fear of dropping into Dev Plan. Constant 12+ hour days to get upto speed and feel productive but no way near where I'd like to be. Permanent WFH is not going to work in the long term.

Classic imposter syndrome. Have you asked your manager for feedback? I’d also suggest finding a mentor you can candidly discuss your work status with and get guidance.

From the DM I received from Datadog, can confirm - this dude is full ass racist, hating Asians. And I’m not even an Asian myself

Dude this has to be the funniest thread I’ve seen 😂😂😂

Data dog is right in that black SWEs have to deal w/ this stigma of being a diversity hire no matter what, even if they’re qualified, and Indian/Chinese managers do (generally) happen to be assholes (even to Indian/Chinese SWEs). There have also been many post on Blind about “diversity hires” in a negative manner that turn into people saying bad shit about black people.

But also absolutely nobody was talking about black people and out of nowhere Datadog starts talking about race and where he and his friends interned. Bro no one asked or said anything. 😂😂😂

  • Meanwhile thousands of us are out here writing real performant, durable, large-scale distributed systems, but can't get a job at Google because we can't find the greatest distance between each node in each matrix stored in a binary tree on a whiteboard.

    • Yeah, I'm pretty sure you were a rockstar SWE as soon as you came out of your mother's womb.

Let's wait for OP to get completely on-board, and then we can verify whether an onboarded SolarWinds SWE is indeed better at writing large-scale systems than an onboarded Google SWE.

You sound as salty and toxic as the Homebrew creator. You're probably not as good as you think you are, honestly.

Solarwinds . Why do you think that Leetcoding (aka getting better at DS/Algo/critical thinking) and building distributed systems are mutually exclusive ?

There are people who are good at both and Google hires them.

I am not trashing you. Just saying the bar at Google is higher. Forget about Blind, two of the best teammates we lost at Qualcomm went to Google and they were the best SWE i had personally seen at Qcom. So they were the best at their jobs plus leetcoded well.
