Think I messed up my offer due to resume blunder?

Mar 18 28 Comments

I got an offer at a FAANG, contingent on passing a background check.

However, on my resume for one of my old work experience in 2018, I did a 6 month gig at Client A via contract under Company B. On my resume, I only listed Client A, and no one asked if it was under contract or not. I foolishly didn't mention Company B anywhere in my resume, mainly because I was always on Client A site and the only time Company B really mattered was when I got my paystub/W2.

In the background check I did mention it was a contract position, but not sure if that will be taken as me lying before regarding my resume. Will my offer be rescinded? Should I mention this to my recruiter now?

Hopefully next year! I don’t think it’ll be too much longer honestly.

  • Background check is usually a criminal background check. Don’t do anything. Stay put

I wouldn’t worry about it. List it accurately on hire right. That’s all that matters

To the OP, no I’d absolutely not contact the recruiter. You may then seem neurotic. Just leave it be. You’ll be fine. I was in your shoes 4 years ago over something similar. In my case, I had a ton of contracting jobs and I listed a client on the resume because it looked better than listing the agency. On hire right I only listed the agencies.

The resume is meant to be a tool to market yourself, it’s not meant to be some sort of legal document. Embellishments that are within norms are fine, like cutting your experience down to the past 10 years, exaggerating work impact, etc

If anything, hire right would contact you and you can explain it then. Your recruiter isn’t part of the hire right process. If you must contact someone, contact hire right. Your recruiter isn’t the one comparing your resume

You always have a right to explain yourself. Just be honest if any flags arise. Nobody cares about this, even if a dog clears an interview it’s all that matters

    • Thank you. For now I think I was as honest as I could be, as I listed it properly in my background check and gave the appropriate paperwork and references. Hopefully when HR gets back the check and compares to my resume they don't think the distinction is too major.
