Hi blind. Recently I got a job at the Bay Area. I’ve always resisted in coming to Cali because of the insane cost of living. What’s the pros of living at Bay Area as a software engineer? Does it give better path for promotion and salary bump? I need to hear something good about it…

Edit..
Forgot to pay blind tax

So much good stuff here for hobbies and entertainment.

Like to ski/snowboard? Day trip to Tahoe. Like to hike? Couldn't be more of that shit. Surf? Cold but can do it. Sail/windsurf? Some of the best. Fly? There's like 10 airports. Like wine? Napa/Sonoma. Beer? Tons of craft breweries. Golf? Hell yeah, half moon and pebble beach. Race cars? 3 tracks in driving distance. Drugs? Weed is legal and everything is tolerated. Gamble? Passable casinos (by the standards of most US cities) and a quick flight to Vegas. Rock climbing? Tons, and Yosemite is day tripable. Music festivals & raves? Several of the big ones are here. Most outdoor activities can be done year round. Etc.

To some degree but not all and not in that combo.

Skiing is totally unavailable without long flights to a huge swath of the country, and northeast skiing is far shittier.

Hike, yeah pretty widely available but we def have some top spots. Plus there are definitely places where it's not that popular. Try hiking in Miami and walk across flat ground then get eaten by a gator.

Surf, super limited availability due to needing specific currents.

Sail/windsurf you at least need a coastal city, which plenty aren't. And sf has some of the best wind conditions for this.

Fly, yeah everywhere has airports but we have a lot and a lot of interesting nearby destinations. Plus in many countries this is basically impossible.

Wine, napa/Sonoma you can't do better unless you live in like Italy or France.

Beer, pretty widely available across the US but the craft brewery thing not nearly as popular outside the US.

Golf, I don't do this so I won't weigh in but I'm sure not every city has a world class course like this.

Race car, most cities do not have 3 top tier tracks this close by. NY is like 5 hours to Watkins Glen, and that's the only great one afaik.

Drugs, not legal/tolerated in many states and countries.

Gamble, not legal in a lot of places and proximity to Vegas is useful, I would not want to sub for AC.

Rock climbing, only available if you have mountains, lots of places don't.

Music festivals and raves, SF probably top 5 US city for these.

Also worth noting you can do basically all of these activities except skiing year round. You couldn't/wouldn't do half of these in NY and Boston and Chicago in January.
