I never thought I'd be doing warehouse operations but with no other options after graduation and covid, it seemed like a good job offer and I figured I would learn a lot. I have a STEM degree and have been a high performing L4 manager for more than a year. I've done a launch, peak, prime, projects, process improvements, etc. I haven't gotten promoted and don't see it happening in the next 2 quarters due to a toxic supervisor and office politics. I've voiced these concerns to HR, senior ops, and ops, with no solid conclusion other than to focus on improving on Amazon pillars.

My goal in taking this job was to get my foot in the door at Amazon and transfer to AWS or some other department upon getting my L5. However, no matter how many projects I do or how high my connection scores, no promotion is in sight. I don't want to stay in warehouse operations even if I did get promoted as I hate the culture here and I hardly see my family due to poor WLB. Ideally, I could quit but I'd owe the company $20K if I did. I'd love to get into an analytics or a program manager role, but I haven't had much luck with job applications because most other job offers have been half of my TC and I only have area manager experience on my resume. I heard companies love to hire managers with Amazon exp, but where?? What should I do? Any recommendations for certs that would help me qualify for better roles?

Any advice is appreciated.

Edit:
Any advice on how to train for a better tech role? I have no programming experience.

  • My fiancé is in the same boat but she’s an L5 and is still having trouble transferring out of Amazon operations as an area manager. She is even considering refusing the L6 promotion since she would have to stay in that role for a year minimum before being able to transfer into another one. From the stories she often tells me, no amount of money would make working in an Amazon FC worth it, not even at the L7 level.

I really have no advice but to keep on the lookout for program management/project manager roles and keep applying. Also keep in mind that if you promote to L5 you won’t be able to transfer into a new role for 1 year.

Thank you for the advice and support! I have heard from others that since the L5 is the exact same role, it won't count against you for the 12 month policy, but the policy is so new it probably could mean different things to different leaders. I hope your fiancé is able to transfer out eventually. I'm surprised so many aren't able to leave with Amazon on their resume.

Promoting to L5 in the same building shouldn’t affect you. I am an L5 AM. Use the time you have in role to skill yourself up. Even learning Excel is a skill that is looked at highly for a transition into PE. Outside of that work on tech, you’re already in a tech company so skill up and transfer to another part of the org.
