If I’m a newly promoted L5 at G with an L5 offer at FB, which one has a better chance of reaching L6?

At G, if I’m lucky and play all my cards right, I might get to L6 within the next 4-5 years.

  • My recommendation- be careful of broad statements like "everyone makes it to e6" or "new grads become CTOs in 3 years".

Many people never make it to e6 and the progression can be slow for many.

The thing that fb does pretty well is that once you are considered to be ready - things happen very quickly. No committees. No irrelevant considerations (e.g. yoe), and no politics (especially in the cases that I was involved in or aware of).

If you're not ready for 6, though, you just wont make it go 6. It's not a question if pressuring your manager or negotiating. The performance cycles requirements are high and consistent which, amusingly, slows down promos in cases where the manager is not 100% sure you will meet expectations at the next level.

(And of course- there are exceptions to everything and you can probably hear a story about anything happening, but this has been my experience with quite a few cases)

I can say for sure it won’t take you 4-5 years to get to E6 at FB. Literally every E5 I know (my team and the sister teams) had become E6 at most 3 years.

  • FB. At Google you’ll probably never reach L6. At FB, quite a few people go from L3 - L6 in 5-6 years.

From what I can see, time in Google helps a lot with growth. If significant portion of your 8 yoe was in Google and you got promoted twice, I would stay if I were you. Just to not miss on the compensation front, I would use my FB offer to get a better pay at G. But even if that gets rejected, won't switch.
The vice versa is also true I would think.
Essentially growth is better when you have a good track record. That's important for promos at higher levels. It doesn't matter if it's FB or g or amzn.
