Hi blinders, TPM job role was not exciting me anymore hence I took a decision to look out for SDM role transition. I have had chat with couple of managers with L6 SDM opening but i feel none of them gave me a clear picture (reality) on how the transition will take place and importantly the timelines. It was all like it's minimum 2 quarters and you need to get good connection score, handle high/low performance, contribute to leadership meetings, delivery, build 3 year plan for org, grow employees, etc. I don't think one can cover all these in 180 days. Requesting blinders to share their experience who have gone through the journey / have seen someone go through it . Ps: i have been a developer at FANG before and have management experience.
2 quarters is 180 days, not 60. Unless you have people management experience, the transition takes time. You are initially a manager in training.
TPM, QA, SDETs all becoming SDMs with no leadership skills. Day 2 at Amazon
So just to get evryone bcak on track, i do have good management skills, else getting a offer from outside org would have been difficult. Please help to share if someone has gone through the transition and can share key things to watch out for.
Curious to know where you ended up with this?

Man I hate it when program managers try to become real managers. Why does amazon even allows this. You guys have already ruined so much of the company, why ruin someone’s career directly now.

I don’t see a problem if the right process and checks are being followed. Very few people are born leaders, most people grow into the roles with the right training and effort. Again, not saying that every Tom Dick and Harry should be allowed to do so but as long as a process is established and followed, there shouldn’t be a problem
