I have been feeling low and disheartened all day today after my 1:1 with my manager. I was not expecting him to bring up the conversation about my performance. He mentioned that my performance has been bad after talking to some of my peers. It has been escalated to the senior management according to him. I'll admit that I have not been great with my work after I came back from a family crisis last year. I don't feel connected with the team nor do I enjoy the kind of work I'm doing and hence it affects my work. I asked my manager if I'm being put on PIP but he said no and that he would not want to go that route. I can feel it coming though.

Like many other visa folks, I'm worried thinking getting terminated will jeopardize my stay in the US. I want to be strong and face the situation bravely but I feel weak and helpless cause I put myself in this situation. If I'm out of the company, I'll have only 60 days and I feel that's not enough to get a new job unless you are a great programmer.

Any thoughts about this? What should I be doing?
If they put me on PIP what are my options? Negotiations?

Please be nice as I already feel beaten. 🙏

you don't need to rush into any decision. let them do their process and see how that goes. don't accept or sign anything. always ask for more time to read it over, consult family and close friends before making a decision. lean on them during this tough time

secondly stop taking this as the end of the world. life isn't the same as it was say 20 years ago. your worst case scenario is you return home. but there's positives to it, you will be close to family and you can LC and keep applying.

now once you have calmed down, come up with a plan for how to improve your situation. it could be damage control at work, start preparing and applying etc. do exercise or something during these turbulent times to take your mind of it.

you will land on your feet and look back at this as a learning incident in your life. good luck.

given you are going through this, I won't downplay it. all I can tell you is that this too shall pass and it will be a moment of growth for you

so just think about your strengths, YOU came to a foreign land (presumably for a masters), YOU landed a job. sure your efforts were built on the hard work of those who came before you, but look at what YOU have achieved so far. among a billion people that's something.

if shit hits the fan and all this explodes, remember YOU can do it again. just start preparing and you will bounce back 👊

Just keep LC’ing and be ready at all times. You’ll have a month or two with PIP and 2 months after that. You can also delay by taking PTO, FMLA etc

Have you thought about the cost you might be paying to stay in US? This work visa system is like modern day slavery...Life is short...are you more than a just sheep in the herd? Maybe, maybe not.
