L7 Google PM considering L6 FB offer

Sep 24, 2019 30 Comments

TC = $500K, 10+ YOE

Hi folks! Assuming FB offsets drop in salary and bonus ($50K) with equal or greater equity bump, should I take the offer? What’s the best way to negotiate the offer?

Also have invites from Uber, Lyft, Netflix and Apple, but haven’t pursued them yet. Should I try to get multiple offers?

Goals: TC, maximize career trajectory, scope & impact, WL balance, in that order.

Thanks in advance for your thoughts!

  • Honest question; do you truly believe that career trajectory, impact, and work life balance will be better at Facebook than Google?

First two, yes, WL, no. But I haven’t really taken a day off here in 6 months.

pawu, stop commenting on stuff you don't know about. There was an on campus suicide on google before not too long ago.

Really. I thought more Google->FB than the other way around even weighted for size.

Google cannot compete on career trajectory. (source Xoogler)

Google is a bigger and older company than Facebook. Ofcourse you expect more ex-googlers at FB, just like you'll find more ex-googlers at Uber, Airbnb, LinkedIn and what not.

Why would you do that to yourself?

Depends on the facts - he could be part of a difficult team at goog or tired of the work there. Not clear what division he is in, and transferring is not always easy.

That sucks. An L7 PM at Amazon would have many teams begging them to join.

what's wrong with your current position?

I would go if there's a product and team you already like. See if FB would uplevel you to 7.

FB claimed that post interview calibration, adjusting level is impossible. Anyone with evidence to the contrary?

      did you ask the recruiter?

Yup, confirmed by recruiter (I was frankly surprised to hear that response).

Sounds like a downlevel for more work tbh. Comp needs to be compelling like 100k more especially since 10-15% of the company doesn’t meet expectations every half. IC6 is no joke.

I am also curious to know why optimizing for career growth/TC. 7 is very senior at google and probably has high scope with high refreshers. You can be a director or even VP at a startup.

Definitely don’t do this. Not unless you are at risk of getting fired at G. You will almost definitely have worse WLB at FB, not make more money, and be down leveled.

Also FWIW, I’ve always seen FB match PM level at G. I’d try to get 7 if you wanted to switch

If optimizing for title and $, then FB. But note that you will most likely lose WLB and need to deal with chaos

Looks like FB has up-ed their game. Till few months ago FB L6 and Google L6 were comparable

Not so sure. Most Googlers I know who left for FB got at least 1 level bump. FB can't just change their policy for new hires overnight; all existing employees would be considered too junior for their level...

It works both ways. Most FB people that I know went to Google with plus 1. Some were boomerangs

Google very conservative with leveling... No way FB folks got a bump

at l7 it depends more narrowly than fb vs goog, but you know this already. where is the market/product/tech opportunity? where is your network? where can you deliver value?
