Why chase TC?

The more compensation one receives, the WLB tends to get inversely proportional. What’s the point of chasing high TC, when our time is limited, and there is less quality time to spend with family? Has anyone traded a high TC role for a role with good WLB and a moderate/decent TC?

  • Your thought may be right but not at this age. If you won't work hard now then may be later you will have to. The world is constantly changing and we never know when our bad time may begin. So for the future security we have to take the pain.

    • This 👆. You should first buy a car and a home first. OP seems only 2.5 years experienced and I don't think he has managed to buy a home and a car yet. If he has then chill and enjoy.

Thanks Uber, Cloudera, Microsoft. I am able to buy a car. I need to think about getting a small house maybe. I was thinking about FOMO, looking at all the TC chasers on this platform. Thanks again. :)

I would anytime go for a slight lower TC in lieu of good people to work with, good culture and decent WLB. end of the day happiness anf stressfree life is the only thing that matters not just money. Theres a number which will meet your needs.. then theres a number that you will be okay with.. then good with..then lunxury..then ultra luxury. For me personally..every number above good is extra money. if it comes just like that I dont say no but if it comes with compromise on any of the above I easily say no.

Yes, the number that you are talking about is 75k for living with an emotional well being, and 95k for having a sense of achievement. I read this somewhere that cites a study done by Purdue University.

    • Those numbers, of course, are dated and location dependent. If you have kids, those are poverty level figures in Seattle or the Bay.

Thank you. I am curious to know, has your lifestyle changed actually when your TC bumped? Or is this something you are planning for retirement ?

No necessarily. I jumped from Amazon to Apple, for TC (didn't want to face the cliff) and the result was: higher level, way more TC and way better wlb.
