LC premium $129 for a year - Is it worth it if not going after top companies?

Nov 27, 2019 31 Comments

LC premium is $129 for a year. Check their twitter for the source and promo code. Expires 12/2 so have to make a decision by then.

I know its been asked many times but im asking again, do you think its worth it? I am poor and unemployed so i dont have $ to spend unless it is really worth it. I would be splitting it with a friend so cost would be $65 each for the year.

I am not going after top tech companies either so i question if its worth it for me when there are already hundreds of questions in the free tier. Seems like the real value is seeing the company-specific questions but I am not going after those types of top companies so does it make sense for me?

I just want ANY SWE job in the Bay Area where I am located. Again, I am unemployed so I have all day to do nothing but prepare for interviews. My DS&A knowledge is quite weak though. I am a long way from being ready for top companies.

EDIT: I do have CTCI and EPI as well, have not worked through them yet

If I’m paying for something I make sure to utilize it as much as possible to get my money’s worth. So, maybe that would be a good motivator for you.

True I can see that. I am already quite motivated given the horrible start to my career. I feel like i dont have a lot of time left to right the ship before i just expire.

But any extra motivation is always nice no doubt!

Even if im not going for top companies? Is it overkill if im just going for any SWE job in the bay area?

      Yes buy it. It will

      1. Put more pressure on you to actually use leetcode since you paid for it
      2. You now won't have to worry too much about it. Less cognitive load since you won't be second guessing yourself everyday or asking questions here about it. Instead you can use that time to actually think about problems. This will give you some peace of mind.

You actually don't need it, there are posts online that screen shot the list of questions from each company. They update the screen shots every now and then.
The only other problem is that some questions are locked behind premium, but luckily the same question can be found online at other websites.

If this hassle is not worth it for you then just pay the price.

I paid for it because I thought LeetCode brings value and the people behind it needs to be rewarded for their service.
You can prepare for interviews without premium and the company filters isn't that important.

No. But, paying for premium doesn't make you good at it either.
The questions, OJ, discussion etc are available to everyone.

IMO yes it’s worth it. I just finished interviewing with a number of no name/mid-tier companies and all of those asked leetcode problems. A few of the no name companies that I thought would be a cakewalk threw leetcode hards at me for the phone screen. I can’t imagine the difficulty of FANG interviews, but even if you’re planning to get “any SWE job” in the Bay Area you’ll still need to be extremely prepared. Think about it as an investment in your career.

This isn't the norm. No name companies that ask LC hard on a phone screen is well, how do I put it nicely, posturing at best and being elitist at worst. Being able to answer a LC hard doesn't say much about how well you can do in your role.

I see. Yeah all bay area SWE jobs are very difficult to get so I know i will definitely have to prepare extremely hard.

Curious, how did LC premium help for the no name/mid-tier companies? Do those companies have LC-tagged questions as well? Then I can def see it being helpful

@Amazon, plenty of companies even no names are asking LC hard as well these days. Yes its wrong but theres not much that can be done about it, no choice but to prepare

  • I only bought it and use it for big company tags and frequencies. Not worth it if not applying to those imo

No one needs it because there are plenty of free problems BUT I found that having it makes practicing a lot easier. I got it 2 years ago on BF as well and got an offer a few months later. The questions grouped by company were pretty spot on. You can always asked for a pro-rated refund later (which I did). I'm getting it again this year because I'm prepping for interviews again.
