Insight on Google Referral Timeline/Process?

I was referred by a Google employee who I’ve worked with in a professional capacity (if that’s relevant?)

I applied through the referral link to a software engineering position. Separately, I have an offer from for an Amazon Alexa team (TC: $215k, L5 Seattle) which is squeezing me for time quite a bit.

Would anyone know if

1) Google is on a hiring freeze (overall or for specific levels)

2) If not, is it true that it might take months if I made it through the process start to finish?

3) Could I (1 YOE, CS degree from Stanford) expect to get an interview from a referral or is it usually just people who work at FANG type companies that recruiters seek out?

Sorry if these are real dumb questions, I am new to the big tech company recruiting process

The only Google positions being approved by SVPs are critical positions for candidates with critical backgrounds. I don't know if you will be a match for that.

But on the flip side, L5 for 1yoe at Amazon is an amazing deal. Most of the external L5s you come across will typically have 3-8 yoe. Do you know which team on Alexa the offer is for?

You got lucky with the interview. Alexa AI is a huge org. There's many other sub-orgs underneath it. The VP running it all is one hell of a smart guy.

If you spend about a few years in Alexa, you can usually do a simple internal transfer to another Alexa team in CA without a massive reinterview. Options are Sunnyvale, Santa Clara, Santa Barbara, or Irvine.

I would recommend starting out in Seattle or Boston though -- that's where the big guns are, and you'll get a lot more visibility for your work.

    2. Is true. When I was interviewing they were by far the slowest company. I think ~1.5 months between referral to offer and I was pushing them to go faster since I had other interviews and offers. This did not count team match. I decided to take another position.

    3. I did not work at FAANG before but do have more YOE.

ok, thank you for the information! I am super open to any role at a bigger and known tech company but the process feels quite nebulous

Since you have amazon I would take it and just continue with google. I think a lot of people are stuck in team match hell too.
