Laid off for Christmas, woop woop

I specialize in AI and have been building AI for big companies for 5-6 years now. I started work at this consulting company in SoCal, I'm on F1 STEM OPT and don't require sponsorship (family sponsor soon) and while I was there, I was building something that was pitched at UN's AI for Good Summit and I was doing really well. The company then hired this more senior AI engineer who would spend way more time being political. Unfortunately, they made this guy my boss. He started giving me data entry work... Which I did. Despite telling him I could probably be more use helping build the next iteration of our AI system, and I could probably outsource the data entry work to our offshore team. He said "no it has to be perfect data! I don't trust them to do a good job!" and kept giving me data entry work... for 2 months. Eventually come last month, he gave me a shitty performance review, saying the only value I brought was data entry... Senior management concurred after looking at my work log, and I just got laid off. They're holding a severance package over my head now which I have 21 days to sign or forfeit. Do you guys have any recommendations? I hate working for assholes.

Somehow your story sounds too much one sided. Expert on ai being on f1?

that’s sad , however I won’t categorize the work u did as not important because before building any model getting a good clean dataset , and Doing due diligence on the dataset is equally imp if not more .... and I think many new data scientists fail to agree t this That being said it’s not good that they later took it against u on ur review , I wish u can back up saying u did what was imp to make the project successful . And start searching for a place which values ur work if possible

STEM OPT lasts 1 year with a 2 year extension. How do you have 6 years of experience on OPT

Take the severance move on with your life, it takes a lot of energy to continue fighting. Spend that on your studies and getting the next big thing.

I agree, you should take the package and move on. It is almost impossible to sue them if it's not related to certain reasons like race, age, etc...

you are likely arrogant and inflexible. data entry is likely something you think is menial and you want to do specific work, that's not how companies work, everyone does what's required for the company to succeed.
