Laid off 🤕 Looking for referrals due to time constraint

Hi Guys, Yesterday was my last day at work and being on H-1B, I have 60 days to look for a new opportunity so hoping if someone can help with referrals if their company is hiring. Looking in NYC or remote only, ideally senior backend/software engineer roles. I have been interviewing actively since past few months as I knew it was going to happen because I declined to move to companys new HQ in a different state. Was hoping it wouldn’t come down to the last day but it has! 😰 I had an offer earlier in the week but they declined to do H-1B! I have already given interviews with FB (Onsite), GOOG (Phone) and AMZN(Onsite) so they are out of the picture. TC: 110 YOE: 7 I-140 approved as well 200+ LC solved Tech Stack: C#/NET Core, React, SQL Server and some AWS. Any help would be appreciated! 🤞

Hi thanks for your reply, updated profile with tech stack

Great. If you are interested in Microsoft, DM me. But it probably won't be NYC.

Amazon blinded007 Nov 30, 2019

Why only NYC? Since you just have 60 days, try for all the options! Also, target small companies as well...

AllianceBernstein Coding=$$$ OP Nov 30, 2019

Have a house and family here so cant leave. Yes, targeting startups as well since they move fast.

Pardon me but isn’t this exactly why you should hang on to every possible opportunity?

Don’t wait till you get senior roles. Take anything that you get now and save your ass. But continue to do whatever you are doing and you should find something soon in your place and a senior role as well. I’m saying this only because it’s very bad time to be out of job, 90% people don’t hire during year end and Jan is still slow when it comes to hiring. If you are stuck with location(I understand) and senior role(🤷‍♂️), then you will be out of country soon!

Thanks for the tip. Yea, senior is not important. Just hoping to crack something and start the paperwork asap.

Reach out to one or two good contracting firms to have a backup in place to handle your h1b situation before you get into the red. You could continue interviewing after that. If you post your skills profile I and others here can refer you.

Thanks updated post with tech stack

DM me your resume. I'll refer in Microsoft. We have a good team that's hiring in NYC to work on Azure customer problems.

Uber uber101 Nov 30, 2019

DM me. Uber has lot of headcounts and is hiring crazily.

How many ppl laid off total ?

AllianceBernstein Coding=$$$ OP Nov 30, 2019

Tbh. No idea since it happened in small batches, 30-40 at a time. Layoffs started in March this year. I lucked out till the end because my team is small only 5 people. 2 of us were let go and 3 relocated to new HQ. Overall I would say around 100+ got laid off and rest resigned.

Given your time constraint, I'd strongly advise you drop your "nyc only" requirement.

AllianceBernstein Coding=$$$ OP Nov 30, 2019

Unfortunately moving is not an option for me. Also, I am hoping getting interviews in NYC will be faster since I am local. I feel applying outside will be slower and scheduling onsite if it comes to that, will be a hassle considering the tight deadline and holidays on top of that.

Fastmail Lynx007 Nov 30, 2019

I second that. Nyc has plenty of opportunities if not as much as the valley.

Microsoft Wirecutter Nov 30, 2019

A lot of startup type companies will let you interview fully remotely. They have the tools and processes in place. Filtering these out in the searches might filter out too many options that might get you out of the jam sooner than later. One thing you need to keep in mind is that you should get a job, get an offer and the new company should file for your new h1b within 60 days. I was in a similar situation few years ago. I got few offers in 2.5-3 weeks. But it took 4 weeks for a new LCA, app filling and finally the start date was less than a week before I were to go out of status.

AllianceBernstein Coding=$$$ OP Nov 30, 2019

Yea 😐 My current H-1B is valid till 2021 so hoping the transfer gets done sooner via premium processing once I have an offer. 🤞

Microsoft Wirecutter Nov 30, 2019

Your H1B stamp expiry has little to do with this. If you're not employed, your H1 becomes void after 60 days and you'll immediately go out of status.

If you are really desperate, why not ask your old company for your old job back. Just move to the new HQ temporarily until you find the next role.

AllianceBernstein Coding=$$$ OP Nov 30, 2019

That is an option if I agree to relocate but I cant due to family being here. Also they hired someone junior in my team for my replacement so not sure if they will take me back anyways. They are trying to cut costs.

Nashville is certainly closer than another country though...

Amazon dmus41 Nov 30, 2019

If moving is not an option then what if you don't find a job? You'd still have to move back to wherever you're from

Exactly

I can go on H4 on my wife’s visa but that has it’s own set of issues. Talking to lawyer about it. 😐
