Landlords in Silicon Valley are difficult

Because of the nature of housing demand in the area, I've had a fair share of dealing with difficult landlords. I find them less understanding, like in their mind they know tenants are expendable. I've moved a few times already. I'm a green card holder, have a family, single-income, and already looking to build my own startup while also maintain an average TC. It is insanely stressful to have to change base around every year or so because the landlords just can't resist to raise and don't care about forming a relationship with tenants. Please do not troll or throw advice along the line of "bite the bullet and shut up". It just isn't helpful.

Would help if you specify what exactly you are looking for with this post, advice, sympathy or just venting

I feel itā€™s just demand and supply capitalist economy. Donā€™t see anything wrong with them trying to maximize income. Arenā€™t u doing the same. What if the HR at ur company said ā€œso difficult to keep these employees, they come, build their own startup and leave or just jump to a different company. No need to build long term relationship with current teammates ā€œ

Point taken, but you are wrong about what I'm doing. I've joined my company's founding team , now still one of the only few left. I have strong belief and am dedicated to it. That doesn't mean I can't experiment and try launching stuff on my own time. On the contrary, would you like to work for a company that has no interest in building a relationship and growing their employees just because they think resource is abundant and expendable?

How do you want us to help? Or is it just a venting post?

100% agree, landlords in Bay area truly suck.

Ever thought about nailing down your housing cost by buying a house? They only raise your property tax by 2% per year in cali

Google coolguy007 Jan 4, 2020

He's trying to start his startup while having average tc, how do you expect him to buy a house?

Apple MakingIt Jan 4, 2020

That. Or just pay for the options to be able to move around without being tied down.

My landlord is great. I pay my rent, they donā€™t bother me. Hell, they water my plants for me when Iā€™m out of town. Isnā€™t most of SF rent controlled as well, or are you in a single unit building?

HeadSpin beebo99 OP Jan 4, 2020

We are renting a single house in the Bay Area. It's too crazy in SF if you have a family.

HeadSpin beebo99 OP Jan 5, 2020

Although not all are difficult. Some of my friends had found really nice landlords they rented with for many years.

I feel your pain. Same situation. Four homes in four years.

People are greedy. Why build a relationship with a tenant when they can raise rent 10% every year and find someone else to pay the rent? People who have rent control are lucky. I donā€™t know how someone like a teacher can manage in this area. Owning a home is the only escape from it.

HeadSpin beebo99 OP Jan 4, 2020

It's a shame because I have no idea how SV can be a startup culture when rent is this insane. Eventually only Americans with home here will be able to afford it.

Startups are often a sacrifice for anyone and having a family can be pretty constraining if you aren't sitting on a nest egg
