Posting for a friend.

I am working at a startup in the bay and looking for a change of jobs before this year's H1B lottery. I feel that I may be laid off soon, so thinking of jumping ship quickly. Are companies like Amazon, Microsoft, Oracle hiring for people with 1 year left on STEM OPT Extension? I want to be able to relocate to Canada/India in case my H1b doesn't get picked this year and try again in the subsequent years.

Also, it would be helpful if you provide referrals. Any other suggestions are welcome.

Amazon is definitely hiring. I am in the same scenario and just joined Amazon. Also two friends of mine are in the same boat and joining amazon in Feb end. Good luck.

If you are talking to a recruiter already, then try and ask for some time to prepare. But at max give the integiew by second week of Feb. That's because they take time to do h1b application. Also at the very least try to go through the most frequent 100 amazon questions on lc and go through the discussion section for the question to understand the thought process. Select the most voted posts in discussion and go through them. Hope it helps.

This is gold advice. Thank you. I am reaching out to recruiters as of now but haven't got any calls yet. I know I'll get at least 1 chance to interview and don't want to blow it.

Try to pay off any loans ASAP and find a well paying job in India and return home. It’s better than getting stuck in the American immigration system mess. That would be my advice to myself 10 years ago.

Thanks for the advice. Going back is definitely the last option, just want to explore more options in the US as you get paid way more for the same effort.

True pay is better. It’s just that the longer you stay here the more difficult it will get to just pack your bags and move. That said who knows immigration might get easier in next 4 years. Wish you all the best!

I was in your shoe a few years ago. Took the Amazon offer. Turned out that I was unlucky with h1b for the third time as well. Amazon moved me to Canada and life has been good since. So my advice would be to be in a company where you have the opportunity to move somewhere outside the US for the near term atleast. Hope things work out for you!

Amazon stops filing H1B is you get hired after February 1st. I think Feb 10 is hard deadline

Don’t want to discourage you, but ask recruiters about this and fast track the interview process. Amazon did not file my H1 last year for the same reason

Oh really, I guess I have to move fast. I'm not prepared enough for I think it's at least worth a shot. Thanks for this advice though.
