TLDR: Recently broke into tech sales and want to make sure I have resume points so I can continue on this career path.

After being in finance for the early part of my career I recently started my first tech job at a Series A startup. I started on the customer success team but quickly moved to a sales engineer role.

We fired the head of sales the same week I signed the paperwork. I am worried if the startup failed tomorrow if would be difficult for me to find a similar job. I love our product but we have an inbound lead problem, something I have no control over.

Iโ€™m looking for advice, similar experiences, or things I can do to cement my transition to tech sales.

salary: 165 OTE

You work at a startup and your pipeline is broken. But it's not your problem? Surely the team isn't so big that you can't wear multiple hats (working at a startup 101).

Sounds like a great opportunity to step up. What's your outbound strategy? Why aren't you pestering your marketing team to fix the funnel? Offer to help, identify gaps, bring ideas to the table. I bet your last head of sales had a similar "not my job, not my problem" mentality.

This is good advice thank you! We have one marketing person for the whole team. Heโ€™s not very social but Iโ€™ll keep trying to win him over.

To the above advice, I'll add that "outbound strategy" doesn't strictly involve working with marketing. It's also about creating and executing upon the aspects of account entry that ARE directly in your control (phone calls, emails, LinkedIn activity, etc.). I've been in B2B tech sales for 18 years, & if you want to be successful you can't strictly survive and thrive if SDR/BDR/Marketing teams are your only methods of lead generation and account entry.

SE with a startup experience, OTE expectations are not too crazy. Looks like you'll be fine finding a job anywhere. Locate the product and market you like.

Thank you for the positive message! I am definitely going to try and turn things around here first. I do see this as a good opportunity to be a solution, not a problem.

We are hiring for a new head of sales. We have an interim for this quarter. DM if you want to talk more and if you think it would be a good fit.

We are a SAAS company, I can give you the details / name in the DMs.
